Legal Considerations When Planning Events

You've booked the speaker, hired a hall, recruited a team of volunteers and prepared a marketing plan. If that wasn't enough, you must also ensure your event does not fall foul of various legal issues. Exact event legal requirements vary from place to place and the rules that apply depend on the type of event. The list below points out the major issues you need to think about, but you should also take advice from the administrator of the organisation(s) involved in your event. If you're not sure about any of these items you can discuss them with your venue, as they should have experience with them.
Premises Licence
If you are going to invite the public to see a play, watch a film, or listen to live or recorded music, or something similar, you need to do so in premises that are correctly licensed. The licence will determine exactly what activities are permitted and between what hours. Don't assume you can have a concert run beyond 11pm without checking the licence permits it. If the premises don't have the correct licence you can get what's called a Temporary Event Notice, which is effectively a short-term licence. For more information contact your local council.
Serving Alcohol
Selling or supplying alcohol is also regulated by the premises license. Not only do you need to have the correct license arrangement in place, you also need to ensure someone present is a Personal Licence Holder. The penalties for breaking the rules around the supply of alcohol can be very severe so take great care in this area.
Health & Safety Requirements
It's essential to understand who is responsible for health and safety matters and to perform the correct risk assessments.
The venue will be responsible for premises-related health and safety, such as trip hazards from worn flooring, or emergency evacuation. But event organisers take responsibility for event equipment, such as trip hazards from power cables for speakers or other equipment brought into the venue.
You will need to perform risk assessments and document them. Think about what sort of things might go wrong and the possible outcomes.
Public Liability Insurance
You need to have public liability insurance in place for your event. What happens if an elderly visitor to your event slips in the car park and breaks their leg? Or if a piece of equipment falls on someone and injures them? These things do happen so you need to have the right insurance in place. Liaise with your venue to see what is covered by their insurance, and what isn't.
Noise Levels
Usually you will only have issues with volume if your event features a particularly loud band or will take place late in the evening. Some premises are subject to noise abatement orders, meaning they're legally obliged to measure noise and keep it below a certain level. Other premises need to give due care and attention to their neighbours.
Disabled Access.
All newer premises are required to provide full access and facilities for disabled people, but older premises are not. Event organisers do not have to ensure access for disabled people, but it's good practice to do so wherever possible. Where it's not possible the publicity should point this out.
Food Hygiene
If you are serving food to the public it needs to have been prepared and stored in accordance with food hygiene regulations. Someone with a food hygiene certificate should take responsibility for managing the catering.Premises that are regularly used for food preparation are inspected by the local council from time to time.
Parking
If you are planning a major event and do expect to have enough car parking space it is wise to talk to the Police about what other arrangements might be possible. If you need to keep kerbsides clear on certain roads you can hire traffic cones from the Police for this purpose.
Child Protection
Your organisation should have a Child Protection Policy and your event should comply with this. If it does not, or if this is a privately organised function, you need to be aware of child protection issues. At the very least any volunteers working with children must have had a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check.

Zeolite and Diatomaceous Earth: What Is The Difference?

Diatomaceous earth is a naturally occurring material. Zeolites occur in nature however they can also be manufactured to create a product with a specific chemical makeup and function.
Diatomaceous earth (DE) is a substance made up of the tiny, fossilized exoskeletons of tiny single-celled organisms known as diatoms. It is extremely porous at the microscopic level.
Zeolites are crystalline, hydrated aluminosilicates with very rigid structures. Compositionally, zeolites are very similar to clay minerals however, their special crystalline structure remains rigid even when in water.
DE deposits can be derived from both fresh and salt water sources. There are two main types of DE - food or feed grade and "pool grade". Diatomaceous earth derived from a freshwater source is considered Food Grade by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Food Grade DE must also meet specific heavy metal content regulations.
Currently over 50 different natural zeolite minerals have been identified and over 100 zeolites have been synthesized. Each type of zeolite has a different size and function however all zeolites are molecular sieves, meaning that they selectively absorb molecules on the basis of shape, size or electrical charge (Carr,1129). The cations in zeolite are very loosely bound allowing them to be exchanged with other cations. Each type of zeolite has the ability to exchange a particular cation in its chemical makeup for another cation.
Zeolites (particularly clinoptilolite) are often added to animal feed and function much the same as food grade diatomaceous earth. Much like DE, zeolite must be fed to animals in controlled amounts. It will increase feed efficiency and decrease the stress of ammonia in animal digestive systems. The addition of food grade diatomaceous earth or zeolite into the diets of livestock including chickens, turkeys and pigs may offer faster growth rates, increased egg production, improved feed efficiency, and drier waste that has less odor.
Diatomaceous earth is commonly used in livestock feed as an anti-caking agent and pelleting aid however its use as a natural insecticide has quickly been gaining popularity. Zeolite is also known to work as an insecticide and due to its high ion exchange and adsorption capacities, natural zeolites, specifically clinoptilolite, are effective carriers of herbicides, pesticides, and fungicides (Carr, 1147). However, zeolites are most commonly used for ammonium-ion removal in waste treatment, sewage treatment, pet litter and aquaculture, as odor control, for heavy metal ion removal from nuclear, mine and industrial wastes and in agriculture as a soil conditioner and fertilizer extender. Zeolite is also used in laundry detergent and water softeners.
It is very important that when utilizing both DE and zeolite that you use the proper type. Only food or feed grade diatomaceous earth can be used as an insecticide and in animal feed. Food grade DE meets very strict regulations in terms of crystalline silica (must be less that 0.1%) and heavy metal content, making it safe for animals to consume.
Obtaining the proper type of zeolite is also very important. There are several types of zeolite (including erionite and some mordenite) that are fibrous in nature and may be classified as asbestos-like materials (Carr, 1151). As well, crystalline silica commonly occurs in zeolite deposits and finely ground products may contain more than 0.1% crystalline silica.

I remember the excitation I had when organizing my school supplies, specifically the pencil box and picking out new notebooks and folders. As anticipation for the new school you may even be saving the brown paper bags from the grocery store for book covers.
With that in mind have you even surprised why your children's book covers or notebooks are often written on and covered with little pictures, images or doodles? In other words why do we doodle?
As a former 4xNCAA competitive nationally recognized wrestler and now peak performance youth mentor and coach; I am going to share with you the most powerful principle that I know. Using accelerated learning techniques based in the latest brain research is extremely powerful in developing the critical areas necessary for learning, a winning mindset, and performance. The principle that I will soon expect you to have the ability to strengthen our concentration, and make deep connections long after we actively think about them.
This principle can be used in the classroom, on the job or in the boardroom. It is simple enough for a child just like yours. Although as valuable to large companies like Google, General Electric and the United States Navy who hire outside consultants to strategically "doodle". This principle can be used to make the quickest change in our ability to think something though. Are you ready?
"Writing is the doing part of thinking"
Please take 15 seconds, right now grab a pen and paper and write the following, "Writing is the doing part of thinking" Why is this principle so powerful? Because when we doodle our mind, which naturally thinks in pictures, is looking for a deeper connections. We doodle because we are seeking or looking for the answer. You are actively engaging the part of your mind through the most effective and powerful manner known today. Writing is the most hands-on and effective method to activate the part of your mind that helps you solve challenges - long after you actively think about them.
I recommend and challenge you to take action on the following:
1. Share this simple yet powerful principle with your son and / or daughter.
2. Get them a separate special notebook
3. Encourage them to take out their pencil box and / or Crayola and play with the truth that we think in pictures.

A Letter to Reconcile Your Marriage - What it Should and Should Not Include

I recently heard from a wife who asked for my help in "writing a letter that will help me reconcile my marriage with my husband." The two had been having problems for a while, but in the past few weeks things had escalated to the point where the husband had been hinting that he was going to move out and eventually file for divorce. So, the wife felt pressured to come up with something to prevent this from happening. She hoped that the right letter might do the trick.
I very much understand the appeal of a letter. You can pour out your heart without having to worry about being interrupted or tripping over your words or becoming too emotional. Sometimes, it's easier to write touchy words than it is to say them. But unfortunately, far too often I see people make some serious mistakes with these types of letters. I will discuss these common mistakes in the following article, tell you how to avoid them, and discuss what the letter with the highest chance of success should include.
Understanding Basic Human Psychology Before You Write The Letter That Will Hopefully Reconcile Your Marriage: Before you get started, it helps to understand exactly what you want the letter to accomplish. In most cases, people are hoping that the correspondence will help to get their spouse on board with saving the marriage. They're hoping to change their spouses perceptions and feelings from negative to positive.
To that end, it's so important to understand how your letter is going to be perceived. Probably the biggest mistake that I see people make is that they focus on themselves in the letter (rather than on their spouse.) They place most of their attention to their own feelings and their own fears. Examples are phrases like "I don't know what I would do if I lost you." Or, "my heart is breaking and I pray that we can work this out." It's OK to sprinkle some of these phrases in the letter, but be very careful that the whole tone of the letter isn't one of negativity and fear.
It's very important to understand basic human nature and psychology. People will move toward those emotions, things, and people that make them feel more positively and upbeat about their situation. And, people will move away from and have negative perceptions toward those things that bring them down. Make sure that your letter isn't overwhelmingly negative and based on dark emotions like fear, jealousy, or possession. Proofread it several times to make sure that you aren't constantly mentioning yourself, how you feel, or what you want.
Keep in mind who your audience is. It's your spouse or significant other. So, the letter should mostly be about them and what you're now going to do to make things better for the both of you. Keep in mind they want to know how and why things are really going to be different. Pretty words are nice, but most people will see right through this and are most interested in how your actions are going to directly affect them.
It's just human nature for people to want to know what is in it for them rather than what is in it for you. Focus on painting a picture of how you're actually going to make things better. Of course, this requires that you have a workable plan before you sit down to write the letter. But, that's OK because it never hurts to really think about how you're going to make some real and lasting improvements in your marriage.
It's so often your actions over time and not your fleeting words that matter. And so often, if your marriage is in trouble, your spouse is already going to be somewhat reluctant to what you have to say anyway. So yes, a letter can open doors for you, but in order to walk through that door, you'll usually need to rely on your swift, measured and decisive action.
Lastly, don't dwell too much on how you're going to "work" on your marriage. Sometimes, when spouses hear this phrase, it paints a very negative picture. Many people don't look all that forward to slogging through their feelings and clocking into the marital time clock. You can usually say the same thing in a different way to make it sound so much more appealing.
You'll often have much better luck if instead of telling them that you're going to "work through the issues" with them, that you're going to focus on bringing back your hot, steamy, and connected relationship to where it used to be. This gives them more to look forward to and gives them an incentive to get on board.
Here's another hint. Men or husbands will often respond better to references to improving your physical relationship. They crave the physical intimacy that means you are attracted and appreciative toward them. Women or wives wants to be appreciated also, but emotions will typically mean more to them than the physical (although this is important to us also.) So, if you're writing a letter to your husband, you're better off focusing on a physical connection rather than alluding to how you're going to "work" on your problems. Actually, both spouses often want the same things, but they will often demonstrate this in very different ways. So, it's important to keep these things in mind.
At the end of the day, these are just empty words on a page. If you don't make good on your promises and follow them up with action, then you're almost better off not even the writing the letter because your spouse will come to doubt your sincerity even more and your job will be that much harder in the end. But I've seen several carefully written letters be the catalyst for reconciling the marriage so long as they were followed up with the right actions.

They were prepared: They did their homework and had a plan. They knew what they were getting themselves into and had already made the necessary adjustments for success.
They hired a company or individual who had expertise in selling Costco to fill in the gaps in their plan and advise them during the process.
They understood Costco's business model and that Costco would not bend their rules even for them.
They were in the right place, at the right time with the right item.
Will your product be the next big item at Costco? Only time and preparation will tell. To get you started I have outlined the first 11 steps which are crucial to preparing for a meeting with Costco.
Product selection: Determine if a single product or multiple products will be offered. At times, in order to create the value needed to meeting Costco's standards you may have to bundle products together. Bundling products can also help with your distribution network as you have created a different and unique item number.
Pricing: Research your distribution network to determine the lowest sell prices in the market on the products you would like to offer Costco. Ensure you have a handle on all prices and products being offered for sale. If you don't you can be sure Costco will. They will do their research which means you need to as well. Create a possible pricing structure taking into account prices currently being offered.
Distribution effect: Determine how selling product to Costco at reduced pricing or added value will affect your current distribution network. Distributors and dealers can sometimes become difficult if they believe you are undercutting them by offering the same products to Costco.
Packaging: Determine what type of packaging you will be offering to Costco. Costco is very specific on their packaging requirements. Generally the require a single display pallet. Get quotes from a couple of different companies on the graphics and packaging.
Logistics: Take a look at your current logistics capacity to determine if you are able to service a large client like Costco. Knowing your capacity will help you understand what your sell through expectations will be. Analyze Costco's routing guide to ensure you are including all required aspects when looking at logistics.
Other costs: Review and take into account these additional costs.
1. Customer service support: Do you have the phone support required to handle the influx of customers or will you have to hire a company to handle this aspect?
2. EDI Costco (Electronic data interchange): Price out EDI to include in your financials.
3. Promotional costs: Will you want to participate in any promotions? The various promotions at Costco are where the sales really explode and should be planned for accordingly.
4. Shipping: Costco will require a delivered cost to their depots. You must cost average this out and include it in your cost structure.
5. Returns and defects: How will you manage the return and defect portion. This can get expensive and should be carefully evaluated.

Code of ethics are a specific set of professional behaviors and values employees must know and must abide by, including confidentiality, accuracy, privacy, integrity. Large organizations have a code of ethics, but violations occur because the standards are not enforced or management feels the violation is not worth their time.
Medium to small organizations lack a code of ethics program because they either don't know how to develop one, it not important to them or it's too costly in terms of finances and manpower.
Enron and Goldman Sachs are good examples of why it's important of have a company code of ethics. In the business world the bottom line is to make money and there is nothing wrong with that but, when it consumes your organization and you take an attitude of making it at any cost, then that's when the problem comes to view and people will do whatever they can be it ethical or unethical to make money.
A code of ethics will keep people within certain limits of what is acceptable in the organization in terms of behavior and business practices. Reality in the business world is that profits rule and as long as the shareholders are happy, and there is full employment in companies no one seems to care and ethics take a back seat to everything else.
With so much talk now days about morality in business and the state of the financial affairs of the world ethics is even more important today than before. Journalist are keeping an ardent eye out for the next business scandal and will uncover every stone to expose one, after all it sells news. Thomas Nagel And His Article On Death

Thomas Nagel begins his collection of essays with a most intriguing discussion about death. Death being one of the most obviously important subjects of contemplation, Nagel takes an interesting approach as he tries to define the truth as to whether death is, or is not, a harm for that individual. Nagel does a brilliant job in attacking this issue from all sides and viewpoints, and it only makes sense that he does it this way in order to make his own observations more credible.
He begins by looking at the very common views of death that are held by most people in the world, and tells us that he will talk of death as the "unequivocal and permanent end to our existence" and look directly at the nature of death itself (1). The first view that Nagel decides to discuss is the view that death is bad for us because it deprives us of more life. Most people are in the view that life is good; even though some experiences in life can be bad, and sometimes tragic, the nature of life itself is a very positive state. Nagel also adds that when the experiences of life are put aside, this state is still positive, and not simply "neutral" (2).
Nagel goes further to point out some important observations about the value of life. Mere "organic survival" cannot be said to be a component of value (2). Nagel gives the example of death and being in a coma before dying. Both of these situations would be equally bad situations. Another observation is that "like most goods" the value can become greater with time (2).
Looking now at what is bad about death instead of what is good about life, Nagel presents some obvious thoughts regarding this point. Life is good because we have the conscious ability to experience and appreciate all that life has to offer. So death is bad because it deprives us of these experiences, not because the actual state of death is bad for us.
The next point that Nagel makes is that there are certain indications that show how people do not object to death simply because it "involves long periods of nonexistence" (3). It is said that people would not look at the temporary "suspension" of life as a terrible misfortune, because the fact that it is temporary tells us that this will ultimately bring the state back to that of conscious life. Also, we do not look at the state being before we are born as a misfortune, or deprivation of life, because that life has not yet begun and, (as Nagel states later), he refutes the possible argument that the person could have been born earlier and had more life, with the fact that if that person was born substantially earlier, he would cease to be that person, but instead someone else entirely.
Nagel discusses next three problems. The first is a view that there are no evils that are not rooted in a person consciously "minding" those evils. Nagel puts this view in to easier terms by saying that this is the same as saying "what you don't know can't hurt you" (4). There are several examples that can illustrate this theory. People who think this way would say that it is not a harm for a person to be ridiculed behind his back, if he doesn't know about it. If he doesn't experience the evil, it is not bad for him. Nagel thinks this view is wrong. The natural discovery here is that it is bad to be betrayed, this is what makes the whole situation unfortunate; not because the discovery of this betrayal makes us unhappy.
The second problem is that which has to do with who the subject of harm caused by death is, and when exactly this occurs. Harm can be experienced by a person before death, nothing can be experienced after death, so when is death itself experienced as a harm? The third problem deals with posthumous and prenatal existence.
Contemplating the good or bad aspects of death, Nagel observes that we must look at the possible circumstances surrounding a death, and the pertinent history of the person who dies. This is important because we miss a lot that is important to the argument if what we take into consideration is exclusively the state of the person at the moment of death. Nagel gives an example of a very intelligent man sustaining an injury that causes him to regress to the mental capacity of an infant. His needs can be fulfilled like those of an infant and be kept happy as long as simple needs are met. His family and friends would look at this as a terrible misfortune, even though the man himself is not aware of his loss. This situation is unfortunate because of the deprivation of what might have been had he not been injured in this way. He could have gone on to accomplish great things for the world and his family, and live out his life through old age as an accomplished and acclaimed individual. This would have lead him to great happiness, but it can be observed that this same man in a state of mental capacity to match that of a child is also happy, but Nagel agrees that what happened to this man is a tragedy because of the terrible loss of the life the intelligent man could have led. This situation can relate to death in this way of thinking about deprivation. Death is bad because it robs you of what could have been.
After making these observations, Nagel states that "This case should convince us that it is arbitrary to restrict the goods and evils that can befall a man to non-relational properties ascribable to him at particular times" (6). There are endless circumstances and happenings going on that affect a person's fortune or misfortune. Many of these never coincide directly to the person's life. We must consider that there is no way to pinpoint the exact position of a misfortune in a person's life, nor a way to define the origin. People have dreams and goals in life that may or may not be fulfilled. There is no way to find all of the circumstances and possibilities that go into whether or not these hopes and dreams are eventually fulfilled, but Nagel tells us that we must simply accept that "If death is an evil, it must be accounted for in these terms, and the impossibility of locating it within life should not trouble us" (7).
There are some who view the time before birth and the time after death as the same. We exist in neither, though Nagel argues that there is a difference. This whole essay has expressed exactly his view that though we do not exist in either case, death deprives us of time that we could have been living our lives.
Nagel makes an interesting observation about whether we can assign as a misfortune an event or aspect of life which is normal to all humans in general. We all know that we all will die and that the maximum amount of life is somewhere around 100 years. So is it still plausible to say this is a misfortune? He also gives the example of moles, which are blind. It is not a misfortune for a mole to be blind because they are all blind, and they will never know sight and be able to appreciate it. But Nagel also presents the example of a situation in which everyone goes through six months of pain and anguish before dying. Everyone knows that this is going to happen, but does that make the event any less of an event to dread and fear?
We are brought into this world and brought up with aspects of our lives that we appreciate. The deprivation of these things that we learn to appreciate is a misfortune, because we have learned to live with these privileges. It is unfathomable for a human being to grasp the concept of a finite life, in the truest meaning of understanding. We do not think of our lives right now as a set out plan or a finite sequence of events. We do not live day to day thinking of what we should do according to how much time we have left. Our lives are essentially an open-ended sequence of good and bad circumstances and possibilities. Death is the abrupt interruption of this sequence that we cannot help but be in the mindset will never end. This is how death is a deprivation, and ultimately, a bad thing for a person.
In conclusion, Nagel offers a good argument in his essay on death about death itself being a harm. Whether a person believes in the immortal life or not, it must still be considered that dying deprives you of the goods and experiences of life. This view seems unavoidable. A person who dies at age 92 has lived a full life to the best of his ability and has experienced more than someone who dies at age 32. The person dying at age 32 had many things that he wished to accomplish and experience in his life, and since the event of death has taken away all possibility of any of these goals coming to pass, and undermines all the work that he has put forth up to that point in pursuit of his goals, death is a terrible tragedy for him.

Unfortunately the benefits of chemotherapy for cancer patients far outweighs the disadvantages. The most noticeable disadvantage is baldness in chemotherapy patients. That is because the aggressive chemical treatments to the body kill the follicles.
One of the most common but yet not widely known causes of follicle damage is the hormone called DHT. DHT is present in both men and women and comes from the hormone testosterone. Post-menopausal women are at greater risk of having higher levels of the DHT. The loss of estrogen during menopause means that testosterone can take over and release more DHT. DHT kills the follicle by attaching to it and suffocating it until it falls out.
