DIY AT HOME - Sell Your House Fast - 3 Options You Should Consider ###

[ad_1]

Are you looking for ways to sell your house fast? The first thought that comes into most people's mind is to call a real estate agent and list their house for sale. While it may be a good option if you have enough equity in the house and have plenty of time to wait for somebody to buy your property, you might be at the point where you know all you have to do something else.

Selling your house with the help of a real estate agent in a slow economy could mean months of it sitting on the market while you are continuing to make payments. A viable alternative is to work with a local real estate investment company who can often provide you with multiple options of selling your property.

Here are some options that you might consider.

Option one: sell your house for quick cash.

Many real estate investment companies work with private funding which allows them to buy your property quickly. They do not have to go and get approval for a loan and wait for some bank to decide whether they can qualify. There is no lengthy underwriting process. They can often buy a property within just a few days of you contacting them. Many times, they will do a quick inspection of your house, do some research on the numbers and make you an offer quickly.

Most of the time, when you are looking to get all cash, you will have to settle on a lower purchase price. This is understandable, considering that the cash investors are putting up hundreds of thousands of dollars of cold hard cash and they need to get a decent return on their investment. They have many choices on what to do with their money. If you need to sell your house fast, your property needs to be a worthy case to them to invest money into.

Option two: sell your house on terms.

If you are willing to look at creative ways that an investment company can offer you, you can often get a higher total sales price for your house. One of those creative ways is to sell your house by owner financing it to the investment company. Many times, this will allow you to sell your house extremely fast, possibly even within couple days of the first contact.

If the real estate investment company does not have to put up all cash, they can offer you a lot better terms because they do not have to abide by the criteria of their private investors. They can get very creative in structuring the deal to make sure it's a win-win for everyone.

Option three: lease option your house to the investment company.

This method will usually work only if your house is in great shape. Most investors will not put funds into repairing a property that they do not own. However, if your house does not need any repairs or maintenance, a lease option to an investor could be a great way to sell your house fast. Just like with selling your house on terms, many times you can have the whole transaction finished in a few days.

While you may consider lease optioning your house to the actual occupant instead of investor, you need to be prepared for what that choice would entail.

When you lease option a house to a person who is going to live there, you are, in fact, becoming a landlord. While some people do not mind dealing with "tenants and toilets," you need to consider whether you really want to be a landlord and be on call 24 hours a day to deal with your tenant-buyer (not to mention issues like collecting late rent, maintenance, evictions and etc.) A real estate investment company will already have all the procedures set up to be an effective landlord and deal with all related issues.

Another issue to consider is how fast you can sell the house. When you sell your house through lease option to an investor, the transaction can be completed in a few days. However, if you decide to do it yourself, it can still take weeks or months to find a qualified tenant-buyer. During that time, you have to spend time and money marketing your house, showing it, and screening prospective buyers. It is up to you to decide whether you can delay selling your house for a while.

DIY AT HOME - The Advantages of Accounting Outsourcing ###

[ad_1]

Accounting outsourcing is becoming a very big industry, especially now that telecommunications have improved. Large and small companies alike see that they can enjoy greater cost efficiency and operational flexibility by outsourcing their projects. The most obvious advantages are in the savings welcomed by outsourcing. Economies of scale actually save money when unit costs go down and volumes increase.

Other advantages of accounting outsourcing include shared risk and greater flexibility. Companies can delegate secondary tasks onto entities that specialize in these areas, rather than having to hire and train new employees. This lets the regular employees concentrate on more important areas. This is especially helpful if the company is just getting started and has a small staff. Now, instead of hiring an accountant or personally taking on the extra workload, the business owner can pay an outsourcing firm a minimal amount to do a thorough job.

People sometimes criticizeize outsourcing. If a customer has a bad experience with a representative, he or she may try to blame the entire idea of outsourcing. However, these are isolated incidents, and usually dependent upon the quality of employees working for the outsourced firm. Many accounting outsourcing representatives are college-educated and speak fluent English. A number of representatives are actually from America and working from their home or from a traditional office.

Remember that as a client, you have the right to request specifics in your outsourced services. For example, you can choose to work with companies that provide advanced technology systems, degreed workers and specific linguistic and cultural backgrounds. Accounting outsourcing is purely an idea that lets work be subcontracted to a third-party company-an idea proven to be very lucrative.

DIY AT HOME - The Purpose And Benefits Of School Entrance Examinations ***

[ad_1]

Acquiring for a formal education has become an integral part of our existence long before the establishment of colleges and universities. Based on archaelogical findings, evidence of early forms of schooling were seen among artifacts such as clay tablets with carved symbols, carvings on cave walls and among others.

Today, educational institutions are in neck to neck competition in terms of setting excellent educational standards aimed at admitting only the best students and producing topmost quality of graduates. To be able to achieve such objectives, school boards and administrations have implemented control measures to ensure that only students who qualify or pass certain categories are admitted to the school of which entrance examinations are one of the control measures applied.

Are entrance exams just in judging the capacities of a student? It is the prerogative of an educational institution to set standards that will assess the overall capacity of a student by way of an admission examination and admit or deny their application for school admittance in accordance with existing laws set by the Department of Education. Some schools however do not have any entrance exams as long as a student meets the basic requirement for the next level of education. However, denial of any application must be based on existing policies and requirements and not because of any other unjust issues.

For what purpose are entrance exams undertaken by aspiring enrollees? Entrance exams are beneficial not just to the school itself but also to the students and aspiring enrollees. Such control measures are established by the school administration to filter students from among the best and only the best are admitted to the school as there are schools that aim towards excellence where the intellectual capacity of a student bears more than the financial capacity. Doing so guarantees the administration that high standards are maintained. Furthermore, producing topmost quality of students or graduates gives the school an unquestionable prestige and honor in the absence of any controversies that will fuel doubts and question the reputation of the school. Moreover, schools that maintain the highest standards take pride in being generalized as having the best students and graduations making the school collaborative with excellence or intelligence.

Students who passed such exams and historically admitted to such schools have a distinct sense of fulfillment and pride in them called "bragging rights" that earn them an edge over other students from other institutions. In addition being with intelligent company is a good motivational tool and stimulant for a person to strive and improve for the best and not to mention the learning from various points of view.

Indeed choosing a reputable school that offers a good quality of education and being a graduate of it is a plus factor in seeking for an employment. Whether we deny it or not, there are big companies that prefer graduates of reputed schools as to them, the school's name itself is already a guarantee of a high quality employee.

1.0 INTRODUCTION

Creating your own product for sale to your market is by far, a better idea, but it has some pros and cons.

2.0 OBJECTIVES

  • To give details procedures involve in creating an information products
  • To provide resourceful links to make this possible
  • To encourage learners to use this ecourse to plan and create their first information product
3.0 MAIN COURSE

When you are about to start an Internet Marketing business, two things will come come to your mind.

The two things are:

  • are you going to sell your own products, and render services directly from your own self hosted website
  • or sell someone else product and services?
In other words, what are you going to sell to your customers?

3.1 Start with Information Product

Let me assume that your answer is that you want to sell your own information products. You may not want to start with a service like web hosting or website design service as you may not be a technical person (AKA a Techie).

Hopefully, you will get to that point someday, if that is what you want. But for now it is a good flay of wisdom to offer an information product for obvious reasons - it is an easier, faster and highly profitable approach to online business.

Creating your own product for sale to your market is by far, a better idea, but it has some pros and cons:

3.2.0 The pros

  • The Leverages
Internet offers the greatest leverages now for any business than had ever existed in Industrial History till date.

If you have not done so before now, please hurry, find and read the book 'Retire Young, Retire Rich' by Robert Kiyosaki, and you will understand the above statement more.

This simply means more leverages, more profits at shorter period for your business.

  • Global Marketplace
Having even one digital product to sell to the whole world is abundantly more than enough to pull you out of the woods - ie if you know what to do.

Infact, it is knowing the process that really matter in this business, and that is what you should pay rapt attention to learn in these your formative years in this business.

After that, the rest is history, and it is you that is going to create or rather, recreate that your life history.

  • Deploying the Power of Global Alliances
By way of Affiliates who offer their lists and expertise to serve you in marketing your product (s) for free.
  • Better Kitted for Success on a Global Dimension
Talking about the skills and experience you gain in the process, you are among the best, on a global scale, not just a local champion and not just for a while but for an expired period of any foreseeable future. Can you beat that?
  • You Become a Highly Marketable Expert
You can now build more and more products faster after the initial experience. Your can do this for yourself and others if you wish to.
  • Robust Resources for Premium Sales
Your initial product can easily be turn into other forms for sales at higher prices - Audio, eBook, Membership site, etc.
  • Residual Income Extraordinaire
You just create it once and sell over and over again, with few and rare revisions when necessary to keep up with technological development in the marketplace.
  • High returns on investment
Such that is never heard of in any other industry. Most of the time, when done, correctly, it usually brings in a consistent basis, over 100% returns on investment (ROI).

There are so many other advantages to be enjoyed by a digital product owner, but let us just break here so that we can focus on other related issues.

3.3.0 The cons

3.3.1 The Learning Curve

This will cost you a bit more in terms of time and money.

But, it is doable.

3.4 A Blissful Start

If you are a professional or you have a high in demand skill set, you can easily start by selling some useful advice on that online.

For instance, you may be a Tailor, Seamstress, Organist, Teacher, Nurse, Doctor, Engineer, Accountant, etc. Do market research on the aspects of your profession that people are searching for more information with the tools that we discussed in chapters 2 and 3 of this ecourse.

Use those results of your market research to build your own product as we will discuss in this and subsequent chapter.

A teacher may for instance decide to own a website and teach the whole instead of just his classroom members. Look in the direction of any of the following courses which are already in high demand globally:

beauty tips,

language lessons - French, German, Russian, Chinese and even English.

Remember, our world has become a global village, there is therefore a very high demand for these lessons worldwide.

A Nurse can teach Health with special bias on Natural Remedies. Most ailments that have become anathema in Western (Orthodox) medicine have been resolved with the help of these natural remedies. Thus, information on natural cures for cancer, diabetes, arthritis, etc. are selling like hot cake now.

We have noted something that as far as information marketing is concerned, the big three areas are Health and Beauty, Love and Relationship, and How to Make Money.

But this does not mean that information is not selling in other areas, or that people are not making a living online selling other products outside the big three. For instance, an Engineer may resort to Technical Writing. People who are not even Engineers are doing well in technical writing.

In your own country, what is the current challenges that people have? Remember your information product is not meant to be all about you, but to help people who buy them to solve their immediate problems.

Some people in your country want to travel abroad, learn baking, get overseas education, do rice farming, do importation, export cassava and garlic, learn computer programming, web design, SEO, decoration, etc., etc.

Please note that to minimize delay and confusion of what product to sell, you must first of all decide if you want to start selling at the local or foreign market .

There are a whole world of differences in both marketplaces.

Again, you do not have to be an expert.

Just find out what people want and assemble information that satisfies that specific want and give it to them at a profit.

3.5 Remember, 'Everything is a Remix'

Google for 'Everything is a Remix on Vimeo' and watch the online video.

Also remember what Steve Jobs said:

'Good Artists Copy, Great Artist Steal. We have always been shameless about stealing great ideas' - Steve Jobs, 1994.

This boils down to: creativity + innovation (s) = invention (s) .

Again, let's look at it this way, the basis of modern day information and communication industry started with the invention of:

Telephone, then,

Radio, then,

Telegram (telegraph), then,

Black and white television, then,

Colored television, then,

Satellite television, then,

Mobile telephone, then,

Mobile satellite television (in mobile phones and PCs), then,

Mobile private and public satellite Video (TV) Channel eg YouTube

Mobile private and public satellite Radio Channel (in mobile phones and PCs), then,

And so on and so forth ... more abound that I have not mentioned here, and many more are yet to come.

I am not about the order of which one came first, I am leaving that to the students of history and philosophy of science, but my concerns are:

the connectivity of the basic idea * + the main new idea ** ,

the creativity ,

the innovation and

the 'invention mix' (as in the 'market mix').

And, it all started with GRAHAM BELL's telephone.

In fact, if you scour the internet, you will discover that, it was not Graham Bell that originally invented the telephone, but the court, US and history at large just credited it to his name because of the wise and skilful innovations he added to the original patent that made it commercially viable till date!

( * the basic idea or the general idea here refer to communication by the old, usual and the natural means.

** while the main new idea here refers to communication by the new means ie the newly discovered or to be discovered means, in the case of telephone - communication by means of electrical wires ).

That is what I referred to as 'stealing wisely' in chapter 9 of this course:

In our days - the 21st century, you do not even need to steal, just ask the experts for a sample or complimentary copy and they will happily oblique.

So do not be afraid to give an old information a new dress, shape or form. It could turn out to be very useful to you or at least to the rest of the people out there.

No, just go and take a long-drawn-look at the marketplaces, the categories, the niches and the sub niches and you will discover profitable niches to play along.

Sites like Nairaland, Hot Spot, ClickBank or JVZoo are good places to begin.

3.6.0 How to Decide on the Kind of Product That You Want to Create

Please note well what I want to say now.

It is what makes the difference between a successful business and a struggling one. It also applies to offline business, not just internet marketing only.

Do not sell what people are not looking for. Find out what they are looking for to use and resolve their problems and fetch out or create the information product (s) for them and they will happily and repeatedly hand over their money to you in exchange for the solution to their problem.

Another way to say this is:

People generally want to buy solution to their problems. They have a pain they want to heal, they have a sore or painful area in their live that they want to resolve as soon as possible or they have a level of pleasure that they want to enjoy. That is the reason they go online to seek for solutions.

Thus, your product must be a solution to their sore or painful areas of their lives, or it must provide the pleasure they need. It must give a specific pain (s) or give them a specific pleasure (s) they were looking for.

That and that alone is what will make them match down your website in droves in search for your product. So far as it resolve the pains or provide the needed pleasure, they will happily and repeatedly pay you for it.

But, there is still another way of saying this: 'in online business, first, find out what people want to buy, then, find (or create) the product and sell to them at a profit'.

In practice, this applies in reverse order to offline business: where people first, find or create the product before they set out to find a market to sell to.

Thus, this small difference is what makes online business a highly profitable venture compared to offline counterparts.

By the time you finish the process of getting your information product, the market is ready, willing and even very hungry to buy it from you.

3.6.1 Meet Specific Need

You Can Be Sure Your Product Will Meet Specific Need and bring in high returns by doing the following things:

  • Conduct a Survey of Your Audience
This is possible if you have an existing Blog or Email list. If not, do not worry, there are many other ways to do this as we shall see next.

On your blog comment or email feedback, ask them the type of product that they will like to have, the format and the topics they will like treated. Find time to interact with your blog readers or members of your list. It can be very rewarding.

  • Scour the Internet for Blog Comments and Forums on Your Niche Market
Many people go online to talk about their problems and their cares. If there are many people talking about a certain issue in a forum or blog, this means that products that resolve such matter will sell well. Some blogs and forum required signed membership for this very reason, so do not be afraid to sign up. Do not ignore the social media in the process: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Google Hangout, etc.
  • Read Between the Lines
This an advanced tactics. If you are already selling affiliate products online successfully, then watch out the type of products that people buys regularly and create similar product of your own in the market. It will sell like wildfire.

Remember, everything is a remix!

Not only in this business but in all aspects of life, everything is a remix.

You can also observe your blog for the most broadly read articles and then create related products for sale. Then just add your links to those popular products and you are good to go.

  • Showcase Your Expertise
I have already talked about this in the previous paragraphs. As a professional, if you have a high-in-demand expertise (eg a beautician, physiotherapist, naturalist, etc.), then you can do market research to find out how people like you are selling theirs online and follow suit.

To avoid creating a product that will not make you money for your effort and investment follow these step one by one and will you find among them one, two or more that you can follow through based on your level of experience.

Please go back and follow the above steps one after the other to arrive at a marketable and profitable product (s).

3.7.0 Start with Your Most Convenient Method

  • Audio - you can just read out or dictate or talk what you intend to write in a standby microphone in a silent environment where there is no background noise. At the end what you have is an audio product that you can sell anywhere around the globe.
Audacity is one of the best tools for doing this, Google for: audacityteam.
  • eBook - later, copying out the content of your audio product into a computer software like the Microsoft word (Open Office, it's a FREE software, just browse and get it on the net) will create an eBook for you.
To sell it online all you need is to turn it into a Portable Document File (PDF) and it becomes a scalable product. More on this in a while.
  • Video - in most part of the world, people who wax music for the first time usually start with an audio CD and later a Video CD and progress to other formats including FLAC, MP3, WMA, WAV, etc. Egypt vice versa.
Did you ever ask, why?

Convenience, cost and preferences.

Camtasia Studio is one of the best and industry standard nowdays for online video. But you can even start with your smart phone and upload the videos onto YouTube and it will be acceptable while you are making money to acquire expensive camera or learning how to use online software like Camtasia.

3.8 Other Product Forms

In the final analysis, your product must take so many forms so that you can sell it in so many markets in response to the market preferences.

Such forms include:

Audio training

Video series

Questions and answers

Membership Site with new content added monthly

eBooks

Coaching supported by telephone calls,

Emails,

Skype,

Webinar,

Short reports,

Assignments,

Templates,

Continuity programs - weekly, fortnightly, monthly, quarterly, bimonthly, etc.

Workbooks,

Swipe files, and so on and so forth.

Suppose you want to start by creating your own digital product now, how do you start?

3.9.0 The Process

Below is an example of steps to follow in your information product creation process:

3.9.1 Do your market research

Google Keyword Planner, Market Samurai, and Longtail Pro, Nichebot are the best tools in the market for this task. I have already discussed in one of this course how to use at least one of them. You can Google for others.

3.9.2 Sourcing for Marketable Information

To make product creation a lot easier for most green horns and even topflight experienced business executives, there are ethical ways that you can source for information to make your new products.

Such ways include but not limited to:

  • Private resale rights
Just type that into your browser and you will find multiple sites to choose from. Usually you buy and rewrite them as your own product and add your own angle to the product. Remember this product is sold to many people and not only you, so endeavor to polish it to make it unique. If you are using free products for this, always endeavor to check out the rights, to avoid legal issues in the future.
  • Interview experts
Find out experts in your field and interview them. You can then use transcription services at Fiverr, Upwork, etc. to write them out in any form that you want.
  • Compile popular questions and give answers
You can do this by yourself even as a newbie in your market niche. You can also use freelancers at: Peopleperhour, 99designs, Craiglist, Toptal, etc.
  • Permissible thefts
Go to EzineArticles.com and browse for your popular categories. Download about 50 articles in your chosen niche topic and compile them into an eBook. You can cite them in bits and pieces and spice the book up with some Vimeo or YouTube videos.

This is legal so far as you keep the authors' resource boxes intact. Remember to insert link to your site as you introduce the subject matter, turn it into PDF and sell.

  • Record other people seminar and reuse
You can help a friend record his seminar on the agreement that you will use it also to promote your own products. Your phone or your camera can do the job cheap for you, no need for a professional cameraman.
  • Set up webinars and teleseminars
You need some experience and confidence to do this, albeit it is not a hard thing. You can skip this till when you have enough money to hire expert to help you in the process. There are free and paid services to choose from.

The free ones are: Google hangout, zoom, bigbluebutton, join.me, meetingburner, mikogo, zohomeeting, webhurdle.

Anymeeting and gotomeeting are paid service, but they also have free trials for new clients.

  • Screen capture your skills using your computer
If you want to teach your skills to online audience, this is the preferred approach.

There is a free tool you can use for this: screencast-o-matic

  • Adapt a successful eBook into another language
China is a global destination now for global trade. Find a book, obtain the right and adapt it into Chinese and it will sell like hot cake. You can also do this with other books and other languages.

This is called Transcription service.

3.10.0 The Act and the Art of Creating Your Own Product

3.10.1 Write out your product outline

Start with major topics that you would discuss in your eBook, then write out the bullet points under each topic. As you fill in simple explanations in between the major topics will later become the chapters, while the bullet points will become the sections and sub sections of the book.

3.10.2 Write the eBook in Full

After the initial rough or manuscript as some may like to call it, go through the product again with the aim of crossing the tees and dotting the ais. Also read the whole plot with the aim of ensuring mechanical Accuracy and some Congruence in the points presented.

Some people may differ on this by saying that you should not aim at perfection, there is actually no prefect product in the market as the Internet world is always changing in a very fast rate.

But I am not advocating perfection here, but wish to clarify the fact that there is always a growing competition in the marketplace and most victims are poorly and unduly hurried products.

If you found it more convenient to start with the Audio format, you can also use this software to get both Audio and eBook copies delivered to you online at the same time at:

dragon speech recognition software

3.10.3 Turn it into PDF

From your Microsoft Word (Microsoft Open Office), you can easily convert your eBook into a PDF format. PDF is a globally available software that is usable in all types of computers.

This is advisable to do as you will be sending your eBook to different people in different parts of the world. Different people in different environments are orientated to different software, so it is good to have your eBook in a generally acceptable format that satisfies these global markets.

Senseforth, think and see your business as a global venture.

3.10.4 Make Your eBook Beautiful

It is more than a common sense to note here that if you add an attractive eBook cover to your product, you will attract more sales than if you just sold it as an ordinary PDF.

Period.

If you do not know how to do this yourself, employ the services of experts online at ebookbaby, myecovermaker or even at Fiverr.

3.11 Write the Email Swipes

Email swipes will form part of your marketing materials.

See yourself now as a Vendor in one or more of the Affiliate Program sites like ClickBank or Affiliate network like Commission Junction.

Email swipes are following up emails that you and your affiliates will be using to follow up your prospects. It is known that most people will not buy from you until you have been in touch with them for about seven times. Go ahead and write them now.

3.12 Create and Set up the Sales letter

A Sales Letter is your secret sales machine and the untiring Salesman.

This is going to be the page that you are going to show to your prospects who sign-up in response to your ads. It gives in details the benefits of your product, why he should buy now, how much he should pay into which account.

Ensure that your sales letter is professionally written. A good blend of text and graphics is recommended.

But if you are scared, you can get a virtual assistant at Fiverr to handle this on your behalf.

3.13 Set up Everything and Get Ready For Sales

By now you must have set-up a self-hosted website for this product. There are FREE and reliable software as well as paid once for this depending on your budget.

Just upload everything - the email swipes, sales letter, all the graphics and relevant files onto the website.

Remember to test-run everything by yourself, as well as asking your friends or mentors to also help you test-run, before you begin to advertise your business to the public.

3.14 The Profits are in the Links

I want to end this chapter by highlighting the fact that we are living in the LINK ECONOMY . In other words, the profits of this business flows through the links.

This means check all your links to ensure that they all work fine. Use associate link where appropriate, confirm your right to use free products sourced online to avoid legal issues; and most of all be sure the download link of your own product is working as intended.

That's the deal.

4.0 CONCLUSION

I just notice that I have gone so far, many pages, many sections and sub sections.

This is because when you have your own product that is where the Internet Riches that you have been listening to, actually comes from.

5.0 SUMMARY

I covered step by step details on how to create your own profitable product for the marketplace. But there are still other details that I have left out for the next chapter.

6.0 ASSIGNMENT

Go over this chapter again and again to get a good grasp of the process as I will be dealing with another aspect of this fast-tract riches in the next chapter.

1) Be A Proactive Parent: Children with proactive parents are more likely to excel academically. So what does it mean to be a proactive parent? Well, you are either a proactive or reactive parent. Taking a proactive approach to your child's education means that you are not waiting until the report card conference to find out how your child is doing. You are actively involved throughout the school year, and you are actively inquiring about your child's performance in the classroom.

Have you ever experienced a situation when there was a problem at your child's school and you asked "Why am I just hearing about this?" Egypt "Why did not I know this was going on?" If so, then you were reacting in that moment. I'm sure once the issue was brought to your attention, you reacted immediately to resolve the problem. However, by the time you heard about the situation it may have escalated into a major issue.

You do not want to wait until the report card conference to check up on your child's performance because the report card conferences are often 3 to 4 months into the school year. So if your child is having some type of problem in school, you definitely do not want to wait 3 to 4 months to hear about it. It's best to nip it in the bud as soon as the problem begins.

So how do you become a proactive parent, especially if you have a busy work schedule? Well, simply sending an e-mail to your child's teacher is a great way to stay in the loop. If the teacher does not send home weekly or bi-weekly reports, I suggest sending an e-mail to your child's teacher every other week to inquire about your child's academic performance. You also want to inquire about any behavioral or social concerns.

2) Create A Goal Plan With Your Child: Let's say that you are about to take a road trip, but you do not have a destination in mind. Without a destination who knows where you'll end up. The same concept applies to academic success. If your child does not have a goal to work towards, who knows what grades your child will receive? This is why I suggest sitting down with your child at the beginning of the school year to discuss goals. Speak with your child about the subjects he / she is taking and ask your child what grades he / she would like to receive in each subject.

So let's get back to the road trip. Now you have a destination in mind. If you've never been there before, how will you know how to reach your destination? Maybe you can use a GPS. So what does the GPS do? It gives you step by step instructions on how to reach your destination. If you want to see your child reach his / her goals you will need to sit down with your child and discuss step by step instructions on how to reach those goals; such as determining how many hours your child study for each subject per week. Anyone can set goals, but not everyone will reach their goals. The ones who reach their goals are the ones who implement the GPS concept and outline the steps needed to reach their destination (goals).

3) Identify Your Child's Learning Style: So what is your child learning style? Not all children learn the same way, so knowing your child's learning style will enable you to help your child excel academically by implementing strategies to support your child's learning style. There are a variety of learning styles that can be condensed into 3 basic categories:

1) Visual
2) Auditory
3) Kinesthetic.

I encourage you to discuss the 3 learning styles with your child to determine what learning style suits your child best.

Visual learners comprehend and retain information by seeing it. Visual learners remember information by capturing words and pictures in their minds. If your child is a visual learner, you can support your child by getting flash cards, purchasing educational DVD's, getting highlighters for your child to color code his / her notes, etc.

Auditory learners comprehend and retain information by hearing it. If your child is an auditory learner, you can support him / her by purchasing an audio recorder. Your child can read class notes into the audio recorder and play it back as a study technique. If your child is not too old (or thinks he / she is too cool for this) you can even create songs to help your child remember the information.

Kinesthetic learners are "hands on". If your child is a kinesthetic learner he / she comprehends and retains information when engaged in physical activity such as science lab. At home you can support your kinesthetic learner by creating teachable moments through every day activities. For example, you can teach your child about measurements while cooking. Supporting your kinesthetic learner will require some creativity.

DIY AT HOME - What is the Average Reading Speed and the Best Rate of Reading? $$$

[ad_1]

The average reading speed of a child in primary school is around 200 words per minute (wpm). By the time we reach adulthood, it has not improved very much, as, on average, most adults read at a rate of about 200 - 250 wpm. While comprehension at this rate is considered reasonable, at 250 wpm it will be difficult to read large amounts of information in a short period of time.

Certain individuals claim to read at times of 10 000 wpm or even 25 000 wpm and say they are still able to understand all they have read. Even though rates like this may be achieved by these individual individuals, a speed of 1000 - 1200 wpm is the rate at which contestants read at the World Championship speed reading competitions. Therefore, if your average reading speed comes anywhere near this rate, you can consider yourself doing fantastically well. Do not feel that you need to reach championship levels in order to achieve your learning and reading goals. It is up to each and every individual to decide how far to push the speed limits!

For a person interested in increasing his abilities, a goal of 500 - 800 wpm is an excellent target. At this rate it is possible to get through large quantities of work in a short time and maintain a comprehension level of about 75% or more. This is an excellent level of comprehension and probably more than adequate for any of your required purposes. Compare this to the average reading rate of adults (200 - 250 wpm), where their comprehension level is only half or slightly more of the material they have read.

800 - 1000 wpm would be an outstanding achievement. In order to have reached this level, an individual may have invested in an excellent speed reading course and practiced speed drills. Believe it or not, comprehension at this level is also outstanding, reaching levels of 100% or very close to 100%.

Results of 100 - 200 wpm is considered a basic reading rate. In adult terms this is a below average speed, but for children between the ages of 6 and 12, it may be considered as average. Only low levels of comprehension are achieved at this rate. An adult who reads at this pace will be amazed at what some of the simple techniques will do for his reading speed. Reading at any pace below 100 wpm will probably be read by someone who is still learning to read or perhaps by someone who is reading in a second or third language. At this rate comprehension will be difficult.

DIY AT HOME - Simple Ways to Restore Your Wiper Blades ***

[ad_1]

We all know that driving is being needlessly forced into being an ever increasing expense item.

Not only cars are becoming ever more expensive to purchase but the days of simply paying to use the roads and keeping yourself insured against accidents are now well gone.

Totally our own fault i'm afraid because governments have a system to introduce 'sneaky revenue raisers' slowly and strategically in order to avoid undue rejection, so their sneaky tricks have managed to slide in pay to register, pay to license, pay to stop , pay to run, pay to park, pay to go to work, pay by engine size and type, pay to buy parts and fuel and now the latest: - pay to use toll roads without refund of any existing road taxes.

It's amazing how many sneaky charges can be slipped in between the voters living in order to feather the political or financial nests of our elected dictators.

Anyways, we are now left where we have to keep looking out for every little economy just to keep ourselves on the road at all. And if they do not get us through the cars they will catch us through public transport. Frankly it's becoming an out of hand rort at taxpayer expense.

Any, a lot of our funds sure pass to this cash vacuum through our purchases of necessary safety parts such as replacement brake pads, new windshield wiper blades, tires, oils and so forth. Maybe even mandatory vehicle testing is just another annual revenue raiser, although it does provide some important safety checks too?

Anyhow, the key here is to stay as safe as possible on the roads yet spend as little as you can do so is not it?

In which case it sure is great to see there is yet another way to hang onto a little of the old hard-earned and in doing so even help the ecology along with a ton less pollution.

Where this can be done is through a fairly simple yet totally annoying item called wiper blades, which of course almost every method of transport has to use.

The problem with windscreen wipers is that they are fairly deficient mechanisms that wear out easily yet can be a bugger to change over due to the weathering they get, based on where they actually are positioned outside of the vehicle. They get it all.

They are also only made from a reasonably soft rubber or silicon compound due to a requirement to be just soft enough not to scratch your windscreen but stiff enough to scrape away the road grime and filth that both wet and dry weather brings onto the screen.

Wiper blades work on a system of dragging up the screen, then flipping and dragging back down again. They operate this way so that the square shoulder that they have on the blade edge can tilt and act almost with a scissor-like action to scrape the filth, grit and water away.

Unfortunately it is this very efficient action itself that causes the wiper blade edge to wear out fairly quickly, which is where two things have to happen.

Firstly you generally would have to hunt down and purchase a new set of blades and then secondly, struggle away, often at the least convenient moment and while hacking up your fingers manage to get the old blades off and the new one on .... But not stay clean too eh?

What I like most about that sentence is that it sounds oh so easy and straight-forward does not it? And that is the trap. I'm actually a professional engineer and yet I'll admit, I once managed to cut myself on these and I have destroyed a set trying to change them too.

So, disregarding all this pain and stress, if you appreciate the mechanisms of what a wiper blade actually does and how it does it, then the entire problem can go away for you ... Almost permanently.

In order to give the public the least headache and the greatest satisfaction then, just a little serious consideration provided the development of a new tool that can simply renovate and restore most windshield wiper blades to near new. Of course this flows onwards to save the extended agony of finding and fitting the darned things, plus the absolute waste that has been impacting the ecology (most blades do not need throwing away when they are). So, regardless that wiper blades are only rising in price and now often packed to force you to buy new wiper arms and shoes with the rubber blades, this robbery can be avoided. This is called 'fabricated attrition' and it is often just an unethical revenue raiser for a certain business model.

DIY AT HOME - Famous Killers - Prominent Murderers of the 1800s $$$

[ad_1]

Throughout history, murderers have always appeared to rivet the attention of the public. Hapless victims, their calculated killers, and all the gruesome details of the crime seem to fascinate most people, and the trials are oftentimes sensational events that attract the masses. Killers committing their heinous crimes during the 19th century were no different than the ones of today, but a few of these criminals stand out in history.

Champ Ferguson - The story of Champ Ferguson is set in the mountains of Tennessee during the height of the American Civil War. For reasons not completely clear, Ferguson became a staunch supporter of the Rebel cause; some say Union soldiers raped his wife and daughter, while others say that the Confederacy promised him clemency on an existing murder charge if he promised his support. Whatever his reasons were, Ferguson became one of the most notorious and feared guerrillas in Tennessee, and also one of the most prolific murderers of Union soldiers and supporters in the area. Noted for his sadistic tendencies when he found a new victim, Ferguson is estimated to have killed over 100 people, although he was only tried for the murderers of 53. Ferguson was arrested and tried for murder in May of 1865, creating something of a spectacle for a public eager to see him sentenced to death. Although Ferguson freely admitted to committing the many murderers, he maintained that his acts were part of military activities and he only killed those who would have killed him. Ferguson was convicted of war crimes and sentenced to hang on October 20, 1865. His death closed the chapter of one of the South's most notorious guerrilla fighters, feared by some and revered by others.

HH Holmes - Known by many as America's first documented serial killer, HH Holmes is responsible for the deaths of as many as 100 people, though he confessed to only 27 of those murders. Born in New Hampshire in 1860 under the name Herman Webster Mudgett, Holmes is best known for the time he spent in Chicago during the World's Fair in 1893. After graduating from medical school in Michigan, Holmes moved to Chicago to practice pharmacy. Dispensing medicine, however, was not high on his priority list, and instead he became involved in a number of shady business deals swindling people out of their money. In 1893, construction began on The Castle, which would serve as his home / office, a hotel for visitors to the fair, and quite, his killing grounds. The building was three stories high, covered an entire city block, and had a floorplan that would confound even the most experienced architect. The third floor was a sort of labyrinth, with windowless rooms, doors opening to nowhere, stairs leading to nowhere, and many more oddities. This was where Holmes committed his murderers, torturing his victims and sending their bodies down secret passageways to the basement where they were either burned or dissected and sold to medical schools. When the World's Fair concluded, Holmes left Chicago looking for more opportunities to increase his wealth and his victim count. When he was caught in an insurance fraud scheme with his associate Benjamin Pitezel, who he had killed along with three of Pitezel's children, Holmes was tracked and finally arrested in Boston. After his arrest, The Castle was searched and authorities began unaware evidence of some of the most gruesome crimes ever committed. After a trial reflecting only five days, Holmes was denied of murder and sentenced to the gallows on May 7, 1896. The story of HH Holmes is one of the most disturbing, yet fascinating, ventures into the mind of a killer.

Octavius Barron - While Octavius Barron did not earn quite as much notoriety as the two killers above, he is not possible because at the young age of 18, he was responsible for the first murder in the city of Rochester, New York. William Lyman was a respected man in the city, with a successful job and growing family. On the night of October 20, 1837, he left his office to return home to his wife and four children. He never made it. As Lyman walked towards his house, he was shot in the back of the head at point blank range, robbed of several hundred dollars, and left dead in an alley. Hearing the shot, a young boy living in a house nearby alerted his father, who then called police. While authorities were busy collecting evidence at the crime scene, Barron was at the local tavern traveling Lyman's money around and reflecting of the murder to his friends. It did not take long for this cavalier attitude to come to an end, however, as Barron was arrested just hours after pulling the trigger. The case against him was strong, and as he was already known around town as being a habitual gambler and drinker, the young man was easily convicted of the murder. Octavius Barron hung for his crime on June 7, 1838, and with his death justice was served. But the tale does not stop here; though William Lyman's life had ended, his story continued.

You can learn more about Octavius Barron, William Lyman, and the surprising details of these men's fates in the documentary "Visions: True Stories of the Supernatural" by Ad-Hoc Productions. Go to http://www.ad-hoc-productions.com/trailers.html for more information.

DIY AT HOME - Function and Uses of a Medical Centrifuge +++

[ad_1]

Medical centrifuges come in various sizes and apply to many different applications, making them an extremely useful device whether in a doctor's office, hospital environment, or laboratory.

Modern centrifuges are basically compact, made either of plastic or metal, and are visually appealing; they usually sit on a counter top on rubber feet so they do not move while in operation. The bottom may be weighed to make it stable while in use. Size will determine how many glass test tubes or vials it may hold at one time. They are controlled by a timer and have at least two speeds, low and high. Many also have the capability to keep the interior cool so when the appliance is working, particularly on high speed, the contents will remain cool instead of heating up as would normally happen when the centrifugal force is applied.

There are many medical applications for a medical centrifuge including studies of viruses, proteins, polymers, nuclearic acids, and blood. They can separate serum as well as plasma from blood, and solids from liquids. The uses are many and not restricted to the medical field alone.

Having a timer is convenient when uses include extended periods of time required for separation of ingredients. The high speed spin creates an artificial gravity that, depending on the substance, will separate the ingredients quickly or slowly.

Medical centrifuges can spin at amazing speeds, especially the variable speed models. They can produce from eight hundred revolutions per minute (RPM) up to a blazing two and a half million RPM. Average use and application for most centrifuges with a minimum of two speeds (low and high) are from two thousand RPM up to sixty thousand RPM. Most uses require the higher speeds but for shorter periods of time.

It is a difference in density that causes most substances to separate when run through a cycle in a medical centrifuge. The high speed units are called ultracentrifuges and these are generally bench top units which require some means of fastening them down on the counter or bench top so they stay in place while in use. Uses for ultracentrifuges include the separation of gases to determine the molecular weight of certain liquids. They are put to use as a means of separating uranium 235 for nuclear reactors. The temperature requires strict control in many of these applications due to sensitivity of the ingredients. They will become extremely hot at high revolutions which are actually a form of friction.

While an average medical centrifuge may cost anywhere from a few hundred to several hundred thousand dollars, there is one instance of an efficient device being created by chemists at a university which cost a mere two dollars to make. The device is basically an old fashioned egg beater to which was added plastic tubing held on by tape. It is capable of creating a low speed centrifugal force that actually will separate blood cells from plasma and has proved useful for simple laboratory tests in situations where no lab or equipment is available. It proves that human ingenuity can work many wonders.

DIY AT HOME - Choosing the Right Living Room Furniture for Family Environments $$$

[ad_1]

Of all the decorating you do in your house, your living room furniture choices create the initial and deepest impression of your home. The living room is often where your family and you spend most of your time. It's what visitors see most and first, and it's often the hub of family time. How you decorate your living room often paints a picture of who you are, what you like and what soothes you and your family.

Furniture Durability

While space constraints can play havoc with decorating plans, having the right size of couches, chairs and tables can offer adequate seating and an uncluttered appearance. Keep your room measurements in mind when you shop for different living room furniture. If you have pets and young children, consider durable material that resists stains and is highly resistant to wear. After all, you want furniture to look good for a long time. Leather seating may look and feel great, but the material is easily damaged and can be costly to repair. Choose instead a durable but lovely cloth or woven material that is easily cleaned.

Color Choices

Every house is different. Every family is different. Lighting, wall color and flooring type can all influence your choice of colors or patterns in your furniture. Generally, dark colored furniture hides dirt and stains better, but the darker hue can overpower attempts at a light and airy atmosphere. Of course, your accents, lamps and window dressings can counter that appearance, so if darker hues appeal to you, look to the accessories and accents-figurines, lamps, wall art and other decorations-to brighten the room.

Flooring Protection

If your living room furniture rests on carpets or carpet, you may consider using carpet protection gadgets. The most popular are disks of hard plastic which flat sides braces the furniture. The spiked side holds the furniture in place while preventing the carpet piling from becoming completely flattered. Some carpet guards have wheels, and some people do prefer them for easy moving. However, the wheels dig into the carpet just as the furniture itself would. Expect indentations from the wheels which can become permanent. If you place furniture on bare flooring, you may consider placing some kind of durable, non-scratch padding between the furniture and the floor. Many people like a soft, flexible square or circle of rubber mesh that can blend with the color scheme in the room.

Summary

Whether you like a modern appearance, an industrial or a traditional décor in your house, choose your living room furniture to match your family's needs and comfort and use your first-impression opportunity to its fullest.

DIY AT HOME - Why Go to School? Your Child Needs to Know +++

[ad_1]

When students understand the connection between school and the wider world of future earnings they do more homework!

In a study by the University of Michigan of 600 middle school students found that, when students were asked to consider what they wanted to do in the future before they were given homework, they were far more likely to do the homework that night.

The researchers also found that students who saw college education as part of their career path were up to eight times more likely to do extra homework if they could get extra credit for it.

Obviously, middle school students are able to make the connection between school work and future earnings, and only needed to be reminded of this connection to become more motivated to learn. With younger students the connection might not be so obvious, but there are other connections that can be made.

For instance, younger students can be told that if they want to be like one of their action hero's they need to work hard in school. Most sport's personalities (not all!) Are excellent role models for young children and often work in schools to encourage children to learn and do well.

But how often do we make sure that children understand the connection between school and life? Too often teachers and parents concentrate on short term objectives - the next test, the next learning benchmark - rather than giving children the bigger picture of why they are in school.

I used to ask children because they had to learn to read. The answers I got were amazing. Some children said they had to learn to read 'because the teacher says so', or because 'my parents want me to'. I would spend time telling and showing them that teachers were not making them learn to read for the sake of reading, but so that they could learn more and become clever enough to get a good job when they left school. I remember, they were quite surprised and this new way of looking at the reason for learning to read and most of them were more motivated to learn as a result.

So, parents, if you want your child to work harder, to do more homework, make sure that they understand the connection between school and the wider world. Point out what it takes to be successful in this world, and what they need to do to get there.

Do this in a gentle way, the future, and the amount of work students have to do to secure their future, can be daunting and you do not want to frighten them off. Tell your child that despite the path might be long, and difficult at times, you will always be there to support them when they need your help.

But do give them a very good reason for being in school, give them something to aim for, and the means of getting there.

Is not that what we all need?

DIY AT HOME - LEGO and ISO 9001 $$$

[ad_1]

The 80-year old LEGO Group believes "only the best is good enough", according to its founder Kirk Christiansen. Accordingly, it is registered to several key ISO standards including ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management) and ISO 8124 (safety of toys).

When was the last time you opened a new LEGO kit and discovered missing pieces or instructions or anything less than satisfactory about the product and the total experience? The LEGO brand is vital to the LEGO Group and everyone knows how difficult it is to console children when their expectations have not been met. LEGO Group can not afford this. ISO 9001 provides the necessary framework and guidelines to hold itself in check while meeting internationally-accepted best practices for running an effective Quality Management System.

LEGO is using ISO 9001 to hold its suppliers and global factories accountable to meet its quality standards and customer expectations. This is one of the benefits of the standard. The ISO certified company can call the shots when dealing with suppliers and have its pick of the litter. Ultimately, the customer wins. The standard is also being used to help fast-track global expansion.

LEGO is closely adhering to Section 7.2.3 of the standard called 'Customer communication'. That is, LEGO is determining and implementing effective arrangements for communicating with customer in relation to:

1) product information
2) inquires, contracts or order handling, including amendments, and
3) customer feedback, including customer complaints

The excerpt below is from ISO Focus + magazines' March 2010 issue, Volume 1, No. 1. 3

Since 1991, the LEGO Group has implemented ISO 9001, which it regards as the ideal framework for structuring its global quality management system (QMS) - with LEGO factories operating in countries well aware of its requirements. Using ISO 9001 is an efficient way of implementing the quality management system at new production sites. All ISO 9001 requirements will typically be familiar to quality management staff at new sites, which enable the company to focus fully on the specific internal requirements. For the consumer, the quality management system ensures that each LEGO box contains the right number and type of building elements, which are contractual to deliver the promised LEGO building experience.

DIY AT HOME - Ten Tips For Choosing a Roofing Contractor +++

[ad_1]

One of the best ways to choose a roofing contractor is to speak with them over the phone or meet with them and ask them some questions. To locate a roofing contractor to contact you can ask friends and family for referrals or do a Google search as there are many great roofing directory sites that will provide a short list of roofers in your area. Its also worthwhile to check out the contractor's own website as well.

Doing a little digging may seem time-consuming but what is even more time-consuming not to mention costly is to fix a botched roof job. So how should you select a roofing contractor? Tips for selecting a roofing contractor fall into three categories: the contractor's qualifications, the contractor's work, and the contractor's past. Read the tips below.

Qualifications

  • First, do not hire a roofing contractor who is not licensed. However, just because a contractor is licensed does not necessarily mean the contractor is a committed professional who will do excellent work. You can tell more about a contractor's commitment by seeing if the contractor is a member of a trade association and if the contractor has taken any continuing education training. If the contractor says yes, call the trade association and ask to see certificates of the continuing education.
  • Make sure they have a permanent business. When selecting a contractor, you need to be confident that the contractor will be able to complete the work they promised to do. One of the best ways to have this confidence is to select a contractor who can financially commit to finishing your project. The contractor should have a permanent phone number and address. Visit their business to see if they have the equipment and employees to complete your project successfully.
  • Ask if they have insurance coverage and how much. Just because they have insurance, it might not be very much coverage. Have the contractor show you a certificate of insurance. Contractors can get a certificate of their insurance that shows coverage dates and policy limits from their insurance carrier. Also ask if they have workers' compensation coverage. Because property owners can be sued for accidents that occur on their property, it is very important that all contractors have workers' compensation insurance.

The Contractor's Workmanship

  • All contractors also need to have a safety plan so ask your potential contractor to provide you with one. Safety plans are important for making sure projects get completed and are required by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).
  • Find out how long the contractor's warranty on work performed is. A typical time period is one year or longer. The length of the warranty does not matter so much as when the contractor plans to stand behind the warranty. Good contractors often will work beyond a written contract. Keep in mind that the manufacturer provides product warranties and often warranties are only valid if a contractor is "certified" to install the product. Be sure to talk to your contractor about following manufacturer specifications that are necessary for product warranty.
  • The contractor should thoroughly discuss your home improvement project with you. Areas to talk about with your contractor include the color and type of products you want to use, how to get a permission if necessary, what the daily clean-up procedure is, and how the work will be paid for.

Past Performance and Customer Service

  • Find out how long the contractor has been in business. Although a contractor in business for a year or two might do excellent work, it would be better to select a contractor who has been in business for at least five years. Often the longer a contractor has been in business, the more experience they have, which often means more choices and better workmanship for your roof.
  • Ask to see pictures of the contractor's work and for references from past customers. Get this information on the contractor's website or by calling previous customers and asking what they thought.
  • Many of the best contractors have had to handle complaints. Complaints are not necessarily bad, but the way a contractor has handled them can be. Ask the contractor how they have deal with complaints in the past or call the Better Business Bureau to find out.

In addition to the above advice, another worthy tip for selecting a roofing contractor is to have three contractors you are considering submitting three bids in writing. Having three bids in writing is useful to compare prices and products the contractors will use to complete the project. If one bid is significantly higher or lower than the others, this could be a red flag. Again, roofing directory sites can help streamline the process here, by putting you in contact with three roofing companies by filling out just one estimate request form.

Remember, what it all comes down to is what your instinct is telling you about the contractor. Even if the contractor manages to meet the above tips but something is telling you not to hire the contractor, do not. With a home improvement job as important as repairing or replacing a roof, you need to hire a roofing contractor what you feel very good about the work getting done.

DIY AT HOME - The Two Most Important DIY Concrete Mix Recipes +++

[ad_1]

Mixing concrete is a basic skill that all DIY enthusiasts should know how to do. Concrete is one of the most common and inexpensive construction materials on the planet being mainly consisting of sand, gravel and cement.

Mixing concrete is similar to baking in that to achieve consistent results it is best to follow a specific recipe. There are a multitude of different concrete mixes for different applications depending on the strength, workability and application for the concrete.

Mixing concrete is very much a science for professionals, but to the average backyard enthusiast, learning the basics of concrete is enough to get you started.

When mixing concrete you will need to mix aggregates such as sand and gravel along with cement powder and water as a catalyst to begin the chemical process of bonding the ingredients together. Mixing concrete is a function of proportions where you will measure the volume of aggregate used to the volume of cement used.

The most common concrete mix used worldwide is the 3-2-1 mix which uses three parts gravel, two parts sand and one part cement. Water is added with the idea that you should use as little water as possible to make the concrete workable for what you need it for. Concrete viscosity is measured by "slip" which refers to a specific test where the amount that a cone filed with concrete will lose its shape once the cone is removed is measured in inches or mm. A concrete with zero slump would be very rigid and dry and inclined to hold its shape, where a concrete with a slip of six inches or more would be extremely wet and not inclined to hold a shape.

The 3-2-1 mix is so widely used since you can fill large areas with concrete for relatively cheap. You could potentially use only sand and cement, no gravel, to create what is called mortar. In the 3-2-1 mix the gravel serves as a filler taking up a great deal of space while retaining a relatively high overall strength. The disadvantage of the 3-2-1 mix is that the larger gravel aggregate will often float to the surface during finishing, and is unsuitable for thin or detailed concrete applications.

The best overall mix for a DIY enthusiast to memorize and use is a simple 3: 1 mortar mix. By using three parts sand and one part mortar you can create the strongest concrete possible as well as concrete that is easy to finish and detail with designs, templates or stamps. By not using the gravel the mortar will have a smoother overall consistency, but will certainly occupy less volume than concrete made using gravel as well. If you are drilling very large volumes of concrete the gravel could prove to be cost effective however for most DIY projects a 3: 1 mortar mix is the way to go.

The sand that you need to use for a 3: 1 mortar mix should be sharp sand, or masonry sand or jointing sand. Each place that you purchase sand will use a different term so it can be confusing when shopping. All that you need to remember is to avoid play sand. Play sand is sand that has been washed and sterilized (this is ok) and then tumbled to soften all the edges of the individual sand grains (this is bad).

The sharp edges of the sand help to hold together the concrete mix better than the rounded edges of the tumbled sand. Ideally you would like to find sand from landscape supply stores which will sell to you by the cubic yard. With a strong trailer you can pick up as much sand as you could possibly need for next to nothing - plus the quality of the sand for making cement will be very high.

The applications for a DIY enthusiast to use a 3: 1 mortar mix are huge. Everything from fixing broken outdoor steps and stairs, driveways, patios, decks, ponds, waterfalls, artificial rock, statues and much more is possible with a simple mix of sand, cement and water.

Start with small concrete projects to get a better feel and understanding for how to work with concrete. Since concrete is so popular world wide, and is a highly advanced science, you will never run out of interesting concrete applications to learn about or try. Combined with being the most affordable construction material on the planet and readily available everywhere - learning to mix basic concrete recipes is a fundamental DIY project.

DIY AT HOME - SMART Board - Pros and Cons of Using a Digital, Interactive Whiteboard (In the Classroom) +++

[ad_1]

We used a smart board to teach with in the computer lab at school. Essentially, a SMART board turns your digital projector / LCD Projector image into an interactive whiteboard that you can write on.

The SMART Board itself is a touch-sensitive giant screen that is connected to your computer. You use your digital projector to display your computer screen onto the SMART board and the software that allows you to touch and interact with your computer.
As more and more school boards and teachers are investing in data projectors, it begs the question whether SMART Boards are a good investment. After all, an intuitive touch interface plus the ability to write on digital documents (with digital ink) would help us to move beyond blackboards, flip chart paper, and overhead projectors.

Pros

  • With the SMART Board, you can control any application through the touch board. So instead of working from behind the computer keyboard, you (or your students) can be at the front of the classroom physically interacting with the display.
  • You can use any of the 4 colors of marks or the eraser to write in digital ink over applications, web pages, or moving video. The SMART board still works if you lose the pens. (There are 4 colored pen holders and one eraser.) When you lift the pen out of the slot, it selects the color or the eraser.
  • Like other digital ink software applications, you can save your work into a notebook file, and you can convert handwriting into text.
Cons
  • Hard to write. The biggest disappointment with the digital ink comes from the fact that a SMART Board is a front-mounted projection screen. This means that your data projector is set up in front of the screen (like an overhead projector). Which means that when you stand in between the projector and the screen, you cast a shadow on the screen ... right where you are trying to write. Sure, it was cool to interact with programs by touching the screen, but, it was hard to write notes because you were constantly blocking the image.
  • Hard to write neatly . To be perfectly honest, it was a little disappointing how our handwriting turned out on the SMART Board. Better than our experiences with the other digital pens (ie the i-pen), but the handwriting was still large, blocky, and messy. One of the things you have to train yourself to do is to not lean up against the SMART Board. When you write on a blackboard or white board, you typically rest the edge of your palm on the board. If you do that on a touch screen, the cursor jumps to your palm and it does not work out. You have to train yourself to just write using the tip of the pen. The marker worked fine if we wanted to underline or circle key ideas, but if you wanted to edit or revise a 12 point, double-spaced Word Document, you've got a hard time getting the control required.
  • You still have to move back and forth from the keyboard to the screen. We could start up our web browser by touching the SMART board, but when it came time to enter in the website address, we had to go back to the desk to type in the URL.
  • Expensive. The Total Cost of Ownership of a SMART Board can be prohibitive for the classroom teacher. Retail cost of a 77? (195.6cm) front-projection SMART Board Interactive whiteboard is $ 1399 (USD) with a grant from the SMARTer Kids Foundation of Canada. (www.SmarterKids.org)
  • You need to supply your own data projector. A new, decent projector will cost around $ 500 - $ 1000. The SMART Board is just a giant touch pad. Your need to provide your own projector to display the image onto the smart board. (Software, connection cables, and stand are included.)
  • You may want to upgrade to a wireless connection ($ 199 USD) to eliminate the cables and the tripping hazards in the classroom. The screen image and the SMART Board touch screen may get knocked out of alignment. This means that when you try to click a button, the mouse pointer appears a few inches to the side. You'll have to realign your hardware which would interrupt the lesson.

DIY AT HOME - Carbon Paper Vs Carbonless Paper $$$

[ad_1]

Both carbon and carbonless paper can be used to make copies of documents without any electronic devices. There are differences in each kind, both in how they are made and their uses. Overall, 3-part carbonless paper is a more popular option than carbon paper alternatives, and here is why.

Carbon paper is the original version of electronic-free document copying. It is covered on one side with a dark, ink-like substance that usually contains carbon. It makes copies with the creation on the first document.

A sheet is put in between the original and blank sheet the user wanted the copy to appear on. They write or type onto the original and the pressure from the application puts ink onto the blank sheet. This creates a carbon copy.

Carbon paper was first used around the 19th century with a patent for something called a stylographic writer. A few years later, another inventor created a typewriting machine using carbon paper as part of its function. This means carbon paper was discovered and growing around the same time.

Carbonless paper, also known as NCR paper, is a better and more popular alternative to carbon paper. It is stain free and biodegradable and easier to transfer. It also relations on pressure from a writing utensil in order to create the chemical reaction that leaves a copy on pages below the top copy.

To make two copies of a document, papers would have a white top sheet and one colored second sheet below. This is called a two-part or duplicate. To make three copies, there is a white top sheet and two colored sheets directly below. This is called a three-part or triplicate. Four copies would have been called a four-part or quadruplicate.

Sometimes, users requires stacks of ten or more copies. This is easy to do with NCR paper. Carbonless copy paper is supplied to the end user collated in pads or books. They are bound into sets using glue or staple. Loose sets or continuous stationary is widely used in printers. Businesses can also especially order as many stacks of carbonless copy paper as needed.

For a 3 part carbonless paper, there are three sheets. The first is the CB sheet that is the original to be copies. The bottom part of the sheet is covered in a layer of microcapsules that contain color formers.

The CFB sheet is second. The top side is coated with a receptive layer which reacts chemically with the color former on the top CB sheet. On the bottom of the sheet, a transfer layer with microcapsules transfers the copy to the last sheet.

The third sheet, or CF sheet, is on the bottom of the set. The top side is the receptive layer which reacts with the microcapsules color former on the sheet above it. The receptive layer is most often manufactured using activated clays.

Carbon and carbonless paper is mostly used to make copies of receipts. It serves as a backup operation in case computer systems fail. These paper options are also used to transfer invoices, service tickets, sales order, and purchase orders. Carbon and carbonless paper is used by modern artists as a surface for beginning a painting.

Carbon paper has some unique uses. Police offers use carbon paper for evidence vouchers. Prison inmates are required to use carbon paper when writing letters or other notes so the prison has a copy. Business forms utilize carbon paper for purchase orders and invoices. Banks and small firms are the largest buyers of carbon paper.

Carbon paper is also commonly used among tattoo artists. The artists can practice draw designs and show it to the customer as they work on it, making changes as needed. The paper is moistened and pressed to the skin to leave a carbon outline. Customers can also bring in a design or message that want tattooed and carbon paper transfers it.

Carbonless paper can be used for these uses and more. Quotes, legal forms, employment applications, insurance forms, proposals, and delivery forms all use carbonless paper. NCR paper can also be used for requisition forms, tracking manifests, and contracts.

DIY AT HOME - What Are the Best Paint Colors For Hospital Walls? +++

[ad_1]

There's hardly a secret anymore that human behavior is highly influenced by colors. Scientific studies have proven that our emotions and mood are affected when surrounded by particular colors. Some cause us to be more aggressive, whereas others have a soothing effect on us. From psychologists to interior designers, everyone seems fascinated with the phenomenon.

No wonder then that when it comes to paintings, specialists are extremely careful to make the right choice. As their ideas come as colors do, in a wide variety, absolutely the only thing they have to consider is the appropriateness of their vision. For instance, a hospital room would not be painted in the same shades as a private residence's living room. The patients would find difficult to cope with some red painted walls instead of the usual white, green or blue ones.

We all may have in contact, one way or another, with the imposing, intimidating places which are hospitals. Either as patients or visitors, we are most certainly overwhelmed by their presence. But, once inside, hospitals have this huge power of conveying a sensation of calm and peace. How do they manage to do that? It's simple to find the answer by just taking a quick look at the walls and noticing the colors they are painted in.

Hospital walls are usually covered in colors such as white, green and blue. There is an explanation behind these choices and it has to do with the psychological effects these colors have.

White is the most common color to be seen on a hospital wall. And that is due to the peaceful and calm mood it provides. Other reason for choosing it is the fact that it denotes cleanness. It implications sterility, which has the effect of making patients feel reassured. This is also why doctors and nurses wear white uniforms.

Blue and green are considered to be the most relaxing and refreshing colors, promoting peaceful atmosphere which encourages concentration. Designers, psychologists and feng-shui experts, they all tend to consider that shades of blues and greens make us fall calmer, more balanced and less emotional. Because green has a calming effect on our nerves, hospital waiting rooms and even psychiatric wards are painted in this color. And surgeons wear green scrubs for the same reason. As for blue, it has often been noticed that children in pain are put in hospital rooms painted in light blue due to its healing effect it conveys.

When coming inside a hospital, the general atmosphere must make us feel reassured and calm. Before knowing anything about the staff's professionalism, our worried look will check for visible signs that we will be well taken for. And the hospital's walls, either white, green or blue, are our first impression.

DIY AT HOME - Kaizen - Understanding Its Advantages and Disadvantages ***

[ad_1]

Kaizen, or the management style of continuous improvement, is very popular these days. Originally use by Japanese companies in the manufacturing sector, this style of management is now used all over the world. If you are planning to adopt this management style in your organization then you first need to understand just what its advantages and disadvantages are.

Advantages:

1. It is process centered. It is thus able to identify exactly where things are going wrong and change the processes so that mistakes do not occur. Wasteful processes are reduced, and this in turn reduced waste of resources.

2. All people who participate in it get certain responsibilities, thereby giving them more purposefulness. Further, since it puts people on the forefront, employee morale increments tremendously.

3. There is reduced need for inspection since there is less scope for error.

4. Teamwork increases tremendously as a result of it and people are able to think beyond the needs of their specific department.

5. Customer requirements are placed at the forefront of company efforts and all products and services are geared to the needs of clients.

6. The long term and short term goals of the company are easily identifiable and there are systems to ensure that these goals are achieved.

Even though the advantages of kaizen are numerous and widely acknowledged, it has to be acknowledged that this style of managing a business has a few disadvantages as well. These drawbacks can be quite serious if a company pays only lip service to this management concept and implements it without really understanding why or how.

Disadvantages:

1. Some companies need to bring about an immense change in their mind set and style of functioning. This is sometimes very difficult and the initial problems created can be very bad for business overall. For instance, companies need to have a very open style of communication in order to put this management style into practice. Also, many employees think very territorially and are unwilling to let go 'their' work areas.

2. Very often, the initial excitation around using a new management style dies down all too soon. As a result, companies are not able to get the results they are looking for. Further, it makes people believe that this management technique will not work at all.

A good understanding of Kaizen will help you use it well to bring about great success in your company. You'll be able to cut costs and increase productivity thanks to this management style.

DIY AT HOME - Differences Between Base, Package 1, Package 2 and Special Edition VW Jetta TDI - 2005 to 2007 $$$

[ad_1]

The base 2005 VW Jetta TDI included quite a number of luxury features which were not included on base 2006 VW Jetta TDI. Included features that were removed from 2006 base cars included automatic on and off headlights, automatic rain sensing wipers, automatic dimming center rear view mirror, automatic dual zone climate control (called climatronic), adjustable footwell lighting, trip computer, lights under the side view mirrors to illuminate the ground when you unlocked the doors, highline instrument clusters with full screen driver information system, and a homelink remote control in the sunvisor. All these features were removed for the next model year because customers found the cars too expensive. In reality, the car now had more features than the VW Passat. Customers walked into their Volkswagen dealership expecting to buy a Passat and walked out with a VW Jetta.

Therefore, VW changed the base car features and the packages. All base 2005 through 2006 VW Jetta TDI included amenities like vinyl leatherette heated seats, heated side view mirror glass, and LED turn signals in the left and right side view mirrors.

For 2005, package 1 included (in addition to base cars), a sunroof, the cold weather package (heated seats and heated windshield wipers), and 16 "alloy wheels.

For 2005, package 2 included (in addition to package 1 cars), leather seats, 12 way power adjustable driver's seat with three memory settings, 12 way power adjustable front passenger seat, multifunction steering wheel with a trip computer, a manually operated rear window mesh sunscreen, a multi function steering wheel.and tamo ash interior wood trim on the dashboard, shifter, ashtray, and side door panels.

VW changed the packages for 2006. Package 1 included (in addition to base cars), a sunroof, and the premium seven brand satellite radio with an in dash six cd changer. They did not include alloy wheels since that was moved into the base package for 2006.

For 2006, package 2 included (in addition to package 1 cars), leather seats, 12 way power adjustable driver's seat with three memory settings, multifunction steering wheel with a trip computer. They removed the rear window sunscreen, power passenger seat, and wood trim.

Because emissions standards were tightening, Volkswagen extended the production line all the way to the end of the 2006 calendar year for 2006 model year cars. These cars are called 2006.5 special editions. These are considered a completely different trim line. Base special edition cars included everything in base 2005-2006 and added a trunk spoiler, diesel edition badges on the front fenders, 115V household outlet in the rear of the center console, and a multi function steering wheel. Many of these cars also had an iPod adapter and tire pressure monitor sensors.
